mixtapecomics:

I’ve spent the last year since my graduation from The Center for Cartoon Studies working diligently to become a full-time cartoonist. I’ve managed to make ends meet by working non-stop: taking every freelance project that comes across my desk, selling at conventions as frequently as possible, going out and wholesaling my books to shops in every town I visit, and through a part-time comics-related day job that takes about 15 hours of my week (on average).

I’m grateful for every one of the opportunities that I’ve had this last year. I’ve been cartooning non-stop since last June and that’s all I’ve ever wanted for my life. …but it’s been a financial struggle. A friend recently joked that being a freelancer means that someone always owes you $5,000 in perpetuity and I’ve found that their joke is 100% accurate.

I do my best to make all the work I do available online for free as much as possible. I have years worth of my journal comic online, hundreds of pages of older work up on Gumroad, and post finished work on my blog and here on Tumblr as frequently as possible. (Giving six month exclusivity to all my work that is in print. Get ready to read a TON of comics here for free in July and August.)

However, being a freelance cartoonist means I’m working regularly without getting paid regularly… In order to make ends meet, I’m still regularly putting mail order sales, comic conventions, my part-time job, and new freelance work ahead of making my own, original comics. And, frankly, the stress of working for a full year with no break (and still barely able to pay my bills) is really bumming me out.

That’s where you come in. If you become a Patron at a $2/month level, you will have access to sketchbook drawings, work-in-progress shots of all my comics, and a first look at most everything I create. I don’t have any delusions that my bills will be paid through a Patreon account; but having any additional support through Patreon means that I can take on less freelance work and create more comics for you, my Patron, to read online for free. It will also make me a much healthier, happier cartoonist.

If you think work-in-progress shots are neat and would like to get sneak peaks of all my work before the rest of the internet, please consider supporting me on Patreon.

A huge thank you to everyone that has supported me already this year: through custom commissions, buying books at conventions, etc. I’m so fortunate and so grateful to have made it this far in such a short amount of time. I just need to make it a little farther.

<3

Rachel is such good people and a fantastic artist.

damn.

For the last few days/week or so I’ve been kinda floating around on a happy little cloud; my life has been stressful, but really generally great and nothing to complain about. My mood has been really up and happy, for the first time in a really long time. I just feel good. So, I kept thinking, pessimist that I am… what’s going to go wrong?

Well, today I learned a man I used to train martial arts with passed away, having taken his own life last week during a major depression. He came up with me and we were around the same rank when I stopped training. I hadn’t seen him since I stopped training about three years ago, but I remembered him as always being the most positive, upbeat, helpful and generally what anyone who knew him would describe as just a really great person. A real good guy. My heart goes out to his family and friends; this was a real shock to everyone I used to train with.

I didn’t know him that well, but spent enough time around him years ago that I can’t help but be shaken by this news. My first impulse was to take a step back and appreciate all that I have in life, and appreciate my recent contentment with my life. So I will.

Things are good, and I’m so very grateful for that.

Like all great artists, I am getting my groove back by drawing Quantum Leap fanart… still have a vague notion of putting together a Quantum Leap comics anthology. Some Sam and Al to get us started.
